President Prabowo Inaugurates Sanur Special Economic Zone and Bali International Hospital in Denpasar
On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto officially opened the Sanur Special Economic Zone (KEK) and Bali International Hospital (BIH) in Denpasar, Bali. He hailed the Sanur KEK as a groundbreaking development in Indonesia’s healthcare landscape.
“I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to everyone who pioneered the establishment of this Special Economic Zone dedicated to healthcare. This is truly a historic first for our nation,” President Prabowo said during his speech at the Bali Beach Convention Center.
A World-Class Hub for Health and Tourism
Sanur KEK has been designed as an integrated, world-class Health & Tourism Destination. Its creation aims to dramatically reduce the number of Indonesians who currently seek medical treatment abroad, a trend that drains the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
“We have learned that a significant number of our citizens travel overseas for medical care, leading to a substantial outflow of our national currency. With this initiative, we will provide healthcare services that rival the very best anywhere in the world,” the President emphasized.
Beyond serving Indonesian patients, Sanur KEK aspires to become a premier choice for international health travelers. By 2045, it is expected to create 18,375 jobs and generate wide-ranging economic benefits, including foreign exchange savings estimated at IDR 86 trillion and potential revenue of IDR 19.6 trillion.
Boosting Medical Tourism and National Economy
During the inauguration, State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir highlighted that around 2 million Indonesians seek healthcare services abroad annually, spending up to IDR 150 trillion. The establishment of Sanur KEK and BIH aims to curb this exodus and position Indonesia as a global medical tourism destination.
Sanur KEK’s vision encompasses a fully integrated health and tourism ecosystem, blending top-notch medical facilities with world-class hospitality and wellness services.
An Impressive Healthcare Facility
President Prabowo expressed admiration for the Bali International Hospital, saying, “When I first walked in, I thought it was a hotel. The hospital’s marble floors and upscale ambiance symbolize Indonesia as a dynamic, progressive nation. We must offer the finest healthcare facilities so we can serve patients from Southeast Asia, the Pacific region, and beyond.”
Honoring Past Leadership
Paying tribute to President Joko Widodo’s role in initiating the Sanur KEK, President Prabowo shared, “I am honored to inaugurate a project that began under President Joko Widodo’s administration. Let us all recognize and appreciate his vision in establishing this special economic zone. While the development was initiated by President Widodo’s government, it is my privilege today to officially open it and usher in a new era of excellence for Indonesia.”
