Banyuwangi Hosts Two National Cycling Championships Again

Sport Tourism Thrives in Banyuwangi

Banyuwangi, famously known as the “Sunrise of Java,” continues to attract growing enthusiasm for sport tourism. The region routinely hosts a vibrant lineup of national and international sporting events that showcase its dynamic spirit and stunning landscapes. This year, Banyuwangi proudly welcomes the National Cycling Championships (Kejurnas) organized by the Indonesian Cycling Federation (PB ISSI).

In 2025, Banyuwangi has been honored to host not one but two prestigious cycling events. The National Road Race Championship will take place from June 27 to 30, followed by the BMX Nationals on July 5 and 6 at the sprawling Muncar International Circuit. These events bring together top athletes from across Indonesia, eager to compete on challenging courses set against the region’s picturesque backdrop.

This isn’t Banyuwangi’s first time hosting such a prominent event. Back in 2022, the city successfully hosted the Indonesian National Cycling Championship (INC), garnering acclaim for its excellent organization and vibrant local support.

“Alhamdulillah, Banyuwangi has once again been entrusted to host a national championship. Events like this create a multiplier effect that benefits the entire community,” remarked Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani on June 26, 2025.

The impact of hosting the National Cycling Championships goes beyond sports. Hundreds of athletes, coaches, team officials, and family members from 23 provinces converge on Banyuwangi, filling hotels and boosting local businesses. For the Road Race event alone, 251 athletes have registered, competing across four age categories—Youth (14-16), Junior (17-18), Under-23, and Elite—with both male and female divisions.

The competition features two main race formats: the Individual Time Trial (ITT), where cyclists race against the clock, and the intense Individual Road Race (IRR), which tests endurance and strategy. The diverse terrain offers a thrilling challenge, with routes weaving through urban streets, lush plantations, residential areas, and some of Banyuwangi’s top tourist attractions.

“This championship supports the government’s commitment to developing sports in Banyuwangi. It also plays a vital role in stimulating the local economy,” added Regent Ipuk.

The National Cycling Championships, held annually by PB ISSI, serve as the ultimate platform for Indonesian cyclists vying for national titles. It’s the prime opportunity for athletes to showcase their talents and secure recognition at the highest level.

Surtiyono, the Secretary General of ISSI East Java and an event organizer, highlighted why Banyuwangi was chosen: “The region’s route closely resembles those we expect at the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand. Hosting the championship here is ideal for preparing our athletes for international competition.”

Alfin Kurniawan, Acting Head of Banyuwangi’s Youth and Sports Office, emphasized the palpable excitement: “Since Tuesday, many teams have arrived and settled in. Athletes are already warming up and testing the race routes in preparation for the competition.”

The championships add to a stellar calendar of cycling events in Banyuwangi throughout 2025, including the internationally recognized Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (UCI-sanctioned) from July 28 to 31, the Banyuwangi Ijen Geopark Downhill in September, Banyuwangi Ijen Kom later that month, and the Banyuwangi BMX event in November.
