Celebrate 1 Muharram: Vinanda and Gus Qowim Join Kediri’s Cultural Parade

Welcoming the arrival of 1 Muharram 1447 H, the Mayor of Kediri, Vinanda Prameswati, along with Deputy Mayor Qowimuddin Thoha (Gus Qowim), enthusiastically led and participated in the vibrant cultural parade titled “Kirab Mapag Wiyosan Enggal Muharram 1447 H” on Thursday, June 26.

The procession featured a striking display of tumpeng, traditional cone-shaped rice offerings, forming the heart of this festive event. The parade began with the Tumpeng Tunggul carrier, followed by representatives bearing Tumpeng Pewara from all 46 urban villages, creating a colorful and spirited procession. Participants donned exquisite traditional attire and distinctive regional costumes, embodying the rich cultural heritage of Kediri. Prior to the parade’s departure, attendees were treated to an exhilarating performance of Pecut Samandiman, culminating in the ceremonial presentation of a whip to the Mayor.

This cultural celebration stands as a heartfelt expression of gratitude to Allah SWT by the people of Kediri, with hopes for continued harmony, peace, and protection from misfortune throughout the city. The event is also a testament to the unity and solidarity of Kediri’s citizens, collectively supporting the vision of Kediri as a thriving, devout, productive, safe, and endearing city.

“Muharram, or Bulan Suro as it’s locally known, is a sacred and contemplative month rich in spiritual reflection,” shared Mayor Vinanda Prameswati on June 26, 2025. “The Kirab Mapag Wiyosan Enggal Muharram 1447 H is more than a spectacle; it’s a vibrant platform for preserving Javanese culture, strengthening our identity and character as the people of Kediri.”

Notably, this marked the inaugural occasion of the Kirab Mapag Wiyosan event in Kediri. Mayor Vinanda expressed hopes for it to become an increasingly lively and celebrated annual tradition, aligned with Kediri’s Sapta Cita vision and its dedication to tourism development through Kediri City Tourism (D’Cito). “Cultural events like this not only enrich our community but also attract visitors eager to explore and appreciate our unique cultural arts,” she added warmly.

The youngest mayor in Indonesia also extended heartfelt thanks to all participants for their creative contributions, which infused the celebration with a dynamic blend of cultural and religious vibrancy.

The parade route commenced at the Grand Mosque of Kediri, proceeding along Jalan Panglima Sudirman and Jalan Dhoho, concluding at the Kediri City Hall on Jalan Basuki Rahmad. At the finish line, the tumpeng offerings were graciously received by the Mayor and her team, followed by prayers and a communal sharing of the traditional dishes, symbolizing unity and gratitude.
