Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah (DPRD) Bali has urged Governor Wayan Koster to take action against the rapid expansion of modern stores and 24-hour kiosks operating across the island. The increasing prevalence of these establishments in Bali is a concern. I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri, a member of the Democratic-NasDem faction, emphasized that the dominance of such stores hinders the economic growth and development of rural areas.
“Our faction suggests that the Governor create opportunities for the development of traditional markets, which are increasingly overshadowed by these modern outlets,” Mas Sumatri stated during a parliamentary session at the Governor’s office on July 21, 2025.
Additionally, Mas Sumatri proposed that Koster establish a cooperative that offers essential goods at competitive prices. “Ideally, these prices should be lower than those found in other stores by leveraging the roles of local village enterprises, the Merah Putih Cooperative, and the BUPDA (Baga Utsaha Padruwen Desa Adat) initiatives that the Governor has championed,” explained the former Karangasem regent.
The Democratic-NasDem faction also reminded the Governor to ensure equitable development throughout Bali. They highlighted the importance of distributing tourist activity across various regions based on their unique potentials. “For instance, why has there been no progress on the Cruise Terminal in Manggis, as well as the potential developments at Padang Bai and Amed ports? What about the proposed airport in Buleleng? We seek clarification on these matters,” Mas Sumatri concluded.
