Former Indonesian National Team manager I Gusti Kompyang (IGK) Manila passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025. PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir expressed his heartfelt condolences, sharing his grief on social media alongside a photo of the beloved figure.
Erick reflected on the significant loss of a loyal friend and dedicated mentor. “I’ve lost a loyal friend and mentor who was hardworking and committed. We worked together at Persija and clinched the championship in 2001,” he wrote, as quoted by detikSport.
He also acknowledged IGK Manila’s notable contributions to Indonesian football, including his role as Indonesia’s national team manager during the 1991 SEA Games victory. “Thank you for all your contributions to Indonesian football, Mr. General IGK Manila,” Erick added.
IGK Manila once served as the sports manager for Persija Jakarta and was instrumental in leading Indonesia to a gold medal at the 1991 SEA Games. In that tournament, the Garuda team triumphed over Thailand in a penalty shootout, 4-3, securing gold at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Born in Singaraja, Buleleng, Bali, he also guided Bandung Raya to victory in the 1996 Indonesian Liga. Beyond football, IGK Manila is revered as the ‘Father of Indonesian Wushu.’ His efforts helped showcase Indonesian wushu on the SEA Games stage in 1993, earning two bronze medals. This development marked a proud milestone, fostering talents like Lindswell and Edgar Xavier Marvelo who later shined internationally.
