Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Vice President of Indonesia, officially brought the curtain down on the VIII National Community Sports Festival (Fornas) 2025. The grand closing ceremony unfolded with the rhythmic beating of traditional beleq drums atop the stage at the former Selaparang Airport field in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on the evening of Friday, August 1, 2025.
Joining Gibran on stage were Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo, and NTB Governor, Lalu Muhamad Iqbal. Iqbal expressed hope that Fornas would serve as a unifying force and a rallying cry for the nation. The successful hosting of Fornas this year cements West Nusa Tenggara’s reputation as a hub for sport tourism.
“This event also showcases our local wisdom. Fornas is a celebration of community sports and joy. It marks a significant milestone for our region—the first time hosting this prestigious event with participation from 38 provinces,” Iqbal declared during the closing remarks. He highlighted that Gibran’s attendance underscored the pride of NTB, and the triumph of this event is a step towards fulfilling a greater mission: hosting the 2028 National Sports Week (PON).
“This proves that we are proud to be part of Indonesia. Let community sports become a national strength. We hope all 38 provincial participants, who enjoyed NTB’s cuisine and tourism, will return with their families and friends,” said the former Indonesian ambassador to Turkey, emphasizing the event’s role in strengthening regional ties.
Minister Dito Ariotedjo congratulated West Java for emerging as the overall champion of Fornas VIII. “Congratulations to Jabar for securing the top spot,” he said. Dito also noted that the successful execution of Fornas in NTB reflects the reach of NTB’s vision to be a prosperous and globally recognized region. “NTB Makmur Mendunia is more than just a slogan, sir. For PON 2028, we aim to improve governance and organization further,” he added, expressing optimism for the upcoming national games.
Gibran, meanwhile, conveyed his admiration for the event, which displayed a wide range of sports. Notably, Fornas this year saw participation from over 1,000 senior citizens from various regions. “There are over 1,000 aged 54 to 65, and 364 over 66 years old. This should serve as an example—sports know no age limits. We should cultivate this culture,” he remarked, highlighting the inclusive spirit of community sports.
He also estimated that the economic impact of Fornas VIII in NTB reached approximately Rp 150 billion, driven by aviation, accommodation, and other hospitality sectors. “Around 40,000 visitors came to NTB. Everyone benefited economically, and it also strengthened our unity,” Gibran added.
Finally, Gibran congratulated Central Sulawesi, which was designated to host Fornas IX in 2027. “We are awaiting directives from the Minister and President Prabowo Subianto. We hope this event will bring even greater impact,” he concluded, expressing his readiness for the next chapter of community sports development.
