Kertajati is Not Idle, Just Lacking Flight Traffic

The management of Kertajati Airport refutes claims that this pride of West Java is sitting idle. There are still flights arriving at and departing from Kertajati. “I want to clarify the statement that Kertajati is stalled; it’s not stalled, there are just fewer flights. The number of aircraft in Indonesia has dropped by about 65 percent before and after Covid. Out of that, only 64 percent are currently in operation,” explained Ronald Sinaga, Senior Executive Vice President of PT Bandarudara Internasional Jawa Barat (BIJB), in response to media inquiries last week in Bandung.

Many aircraft are in maintenance mode, as they are due for repairs. “Soekarno-Hatta’s GMF maintenance facilities are at full capacity, and Bali is also fully booked,” Ronald added.

Previously, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir highlighted that Indonesia is experiencing a shortage of aircraft. Currently, there are only 410 planes serving domestic flights, while at least 750 are needed. Returning to Kertajati, Ronald emphasized that the ongoing operations at Kertajati, including regular international flights and pilgrimage services, are proof that the airport is functional. Notably, the international route to Singapore operated by Scoot boasts a load factor exceeding 90 percent.

“When I offered Scoot the route, it was initially set for two flights a week. I met with them recently, and they mentioned, ‘Mr. Ronald, we’re still waiting for additional aircraft. Once they arrive, we will start flying to Kertajati,'” he shared.

Other airlines, like Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, are also expected to return. “We are currently negotiating with both Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia,” he stated.

While it’s true that domestic flights have ceased since June, this is solely due to the reduced availability of aircraft. Many planes are in line for regular maintenance, particularly following the pandemic.

Regarding concerns about the airport’s distance, Ronald assured that Kertajati is easily accessible, especially via the toll road. The journey from Bandung to Kertajati can be completed in about 60 minutes by car.

Currently, Kertajati is focusing on preparing for Umrah flights, collaborating with travel agents and airlines. The target is to initiate Umrah flight services from Kertajati by early October.
