KMP Agung Samudra IX Runs Aground in Bali Strait: Here’s What Happened

On the afternoon of Monday, June 23, 2025, the passenger motor vessel Agung Samudra IX ran aground in the Bali Strait, just west of Pura Segara Gilimanuk in Jembrana, Bali. The incident occurred as the ship was attempting to dock at the LCM Pier of Gilimanuk Harbor but was swept away by strong currents.

The grounding happened around 3:30 PM local time. The Agung Samudra IX, which had departed from the Ketapang LCM Harbor heading to Gilimanuk, suddenly encountered powerful currents while maneuvering to dock. The sea was receding at the time, limiting the vessel’s ability to navigate away, ultimately causing it to run aground.

As of 4:25 PM, the ship remained stranded at the site. Plans are underway to refloat the vessel with assistance from the Agung Samudra XVIII, a sister ship operated by the same company, according to Kompol Arya Agung Arjana Putra, Head of the Gilimanuk Harbor Police Station.

The ship’s captain is actively trying to maneuver the vessel free from its stuck position, but efforts are hindered by the low tide. The crew is waiting for the tide to rise before the ship can be safely refloated. All passengers remain on board, and a full passenger and vehicle manifest is still being compiled.

Authorities continue to verify the number of passengers and vehicles on the vessel to ensure everyone’s safety and expedite rescue efforts.
