Mahayastra Bangga Gianyar Hosts Aspac with Stunning Bonsai Showcase

Bupati Gianyar, I Made Mahayastra, took a personal tour of the Asia Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention (Aspac), held on Thursday, July 17, at the City Square and Cultural Hall of Gianyar. This international event showcased hundreds of bonsai and suiseki collections from various regions, including a selection from Mahayastra’s own private collection.

During his visit, Mahayastra engaged in discussions with international judges who were evaluating more than 500 bonsai from diverse categories. He regarded the hosting of Aspac in Gianyar as a significant achievement for the bonsai community in Bali.

“It’s historic that we can host Aspac in Gianyar after an incredible effort,” Mahayastra stated on July 17, 2025. “I personally lobbied and convinced the committee in the Philippines, and as a result, we were entrusted with this honor.” He expressed hope that Aspac 2025 would not only serve as an exhibition but also mark a milestone for the progress of the national bonsai scene, showcasing masterpieces that will hold historical value in the future.

Unlike the annual open bonsai exhibitions, Mahayastra pointed out that Aspac utilized a rigorous selection system curated by experts. “There are no competition classes here. All trees must pass curation before being displayed,” he explained.

In addition to bonsai, Aspac featured suiseki, the art of arranging natural stones from rivers and mountains. The event also welcomed 14 bonsai trainers from abroad, notably Nakajima from Japan, renowned as one of the best trainers in the world.

Bupati Mahayastra also visited the bonsai market set up around the City Square and Cultural Hall, taking the opportunity to purchase several bonsai materials to enhance his personal collection.
