Residents Reject, But Tanjung Aan Beach Stall Cleanup Moves Forward

Injourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) is committed to organizing the sales stalls and eateries at Tanjung Aan Beach in Sengkol Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok, despite facing opposition from local residents. ITDC asserts that socialization and notifications regarding the area’s clearance have been conducted since 2023. “We will continue with the clearance and organization in accordance with the master plan for the area’s development,” stated Wahyu Moerhadi Nugroho, General Manager of The Mandalika, during a media briefing on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in Praya.

Wahyu elaborated that ITDC is currently utilizing the land through legal cooperation schemes such as the Land Utilization Development Agreement (LUDA) and long-term leases, all on state-owned land managed by ITDC in accordance with Government Regulation No. 50 of 2008.

He emphasized that the land utilization by investors does not equate to privatization, and the public will still have access to the beach. He cited the management of The Nusa Dua in Bali as an example, where the community retains free access to the beach despite being within an international hotel area. “We have communicated this clearly, and we are now in the process of clearing and organizing the land according to the master plan, in line with the Lombok Tengah Spatial Plan and the Presidential Regulation on the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (KEK),” he explained.

Wahyu mentioned that ITDC has consistently implemented a collaborative approach with all stakeholders to maximize the development within the Mandalika Special Economic Zone. He pointed to the Mandalika Bazaar as a prime example of this collaboration. “We prepare the physical infrastructure, and then local SMEs can benefit from the economic activity generated by visitors to the Mandalika area. Currently, in Kuta Village, a local tourism awareness group has established a hydroponic business that is now part of the Mandalika Bazaar. This is a testament to our collaborative efforts,” he added.

Wahyu rejected claims of arrogance in the enforcement process at Tanjung Aan Beach, asserting that ITDC has been proactive in informing residents about the interest from investors in the area, necessitating the organization of the stalls. “In 2023, we conducted socialization, and even before that, we had already reached out to the community. However, at that time, residents were still engaged in their activities,” he noted.

ITDC assures that all actions taken have followed a thorough process. Furthermore, the organization remains open to communication with all parties to ensure that the clearance of Tanjung Aan Beach proceeds smoothly and without obstacles. “We did not act hastily; we have communicated and sent letters to inform everyone that it is time for the area to be cleared,” he asserted.

Previously, the Regent of Central Lombok, Lalu Pathul Bahri, suggested that ITDC and the local stall owners at Tanjung Aan Beach meet to discuss the situation. He emphasized the importance of dialogue to prevent prolonged unrest. “Perhaps we can sit down together to resolve these issues,” Pathul said to the media on June 25, 2026.

It is known that ITDC, as the manager of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone, plans to develop a five-star hotel and beach club at Tanjung Aan Beach, which is part of the land under its management. So far, PT ITDC has established commitments with two investors to develop the Tanjung Aan area, including PT Kleo Mandalika Resort, which plans to build a five-star hotel with a total investment projected to reach IDR 2 trillion.
