Toba Caldera Geopark Revalidation Complete, Bobby Confident in Securing Green Card

The revalidation process for the Toba Caldera Geopark has officially concluded, and North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution is optimistic about receiving the coveted green card. “We are hopeful, having conducted activities from the district level to the provincial level, culminating in our international submission,” Bobby stated in a written declaration on Friday, July 25, 2025. This announcement came after he hosted a dinner for UNESCO assessors—their team included Dr. Jeon Yongmun and Professor Jose Brilha—at the Tengku Rizal Nurdin Hall, Governor’s Residence, on the evening of July 24.

Bobby emphasized that the entire revalidation process was executed swiftly, thanks to the collective efforts of all involved parties, including the North Sumatra provincial government, local authorities around Lake Toba, and various ministries and agencies. “We are united in our commitment to protect the environment, preserve Lake Toba, and uphold the traditions passed down from our ancestors, as well as respect the divine intentions for humanity,” he elaborated.

Despite the progress, Bobby revealed that the assessors shared some feedback following the revalidation. These insights will serve as a foundation for the future stewardship of Lake Toba. “We are grateful for the input we’ve received; these observations aren’t merely for scoring well but for truly caring for our environment,” Bobby noted.

Separately, Azizul Kholis, General Manager of the Toba Caldera Geopark, highlighted that the preparations for revalidation were executed in a remarkably short timeframe. He attributed this success to the commitment from all stakeholders, especially Governor Bobby Nasution. Azizul further stated that all recommendations have been met, including the research and proposals for new geosites, the inventory of cultural and natural heritage materials, improved visibility and informational panels, and active participation in the Global Geopark Network (GGN). “Without our leader’s dedication, none of this would have been possible, as it impacts the welfare of the community, tourism, and North Sumatra’s reputation on a global scale,” Azizul concluded.

Notable attendees at the dinner included Deputy Governor Surya, Provincial Secretary of North Sumatra Togap Simangunsong, and various district heads from the Lake Toba area.
