TPA Suwung Closes Every Wednesday; Residents Urged to Enhance Waste Sorting Efforts

The Suwung Final Disposal Site (TPA) located in Dusun Suwung Batan Kendal, Sesetan Village, Denpasar, will be closed every Wednesday, starting July 16, 2025. In response to this change, Ketut Adi Wiguna, Head of Waste Management and Hazardous Waste at the Denpasar Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), has encouraged the community to enhance their waste sorting at the source.

“We urge the public to improve their waste separation and processing at the source to reduce the amount of waste directed to the Suwung facility,” Adi stated when contacted.

The weekly closure of the Suwung landfill, as part of a follow-up from the Bali Environmental Agency, aims to facilitate the restructuring and capping of the site with soil. Starting August 1, 2025, the facility will only accept inorganic and residual waste. Any other types of waste will be refused or returned.

Currently, Denpasar generates approximately 1,000 tons of waste each day, with around 60% being organic and 40% inorganic. With the changes at Suwung, Adi has called upon village heads, local leaders, and community members to maximize the use of vertical gardens, waste banks, and reduce-reuse-recycle facilities (TPS3R). Adi also emphasized the need to diminish the reliance on single-use plastics.

Denpasar now boasts 24 TPS3R sites, and Adi encourages optimizing their use in accordance with the available infrastructure and human resources at each facility. “This way, we can prevent waste from overflowing and accumulating at the TPS3R locations,” Adi explained.
