Ustaz Khalid Basalamah’s Insight on the KPK Summons Explained

Recently, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summoned Ustaz Khalid Basalamah for questioning related to an investigation into alleged corruption in the hajj quota allocation.

“Yes, Ustaz Khalid Basalamah was called in and questioned regarding the hajj case,” confirmed KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to reporters on Monday, June 23, 2025.

Called as a witness, Ustaz Khalid’s expertise as a religious scholar with deep knowledge of hajj practices was crucial for the investigation.

“The focus was on his understanding of how the hajj pilgrimage is managed,” Budi explained.

In a talk show titled “Discussing Ustaz Khalid Basalamah’s Summons by KPK,” uploaded on his YouTube channel on June 26, 2025, Ustaz Khalid clarified the situation. He emphasized he isn’t implicated in the alleged corruption but was asked solely to share information about hajj and its quota.

As a preacher who operates a hajj and umrah travel agency, KPK found it necessary to seek his insights. “I have no ties to corruption at all. I am neither the Minister of Religious Affairs nor a former official in that department,” he stated clearly.

Here is Ustaz Khalid Basalamah’s full explanation regarding his KPK summons:

“As followers of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah, we uphold obedience to authorities. This is based on Surah An-Nisa verse 59: ‘O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.’ When KPK invited me, I complied out of respect and duty as a citizen. Importantly, I was not summoned as a suspect. The process for suspects is entirely different—you know the standard procedures and attire. I was only called to provide information pertinent to the investigation.

My role is as a practitioner in the field, running a travel business entrusted by Allah, that facilitates pilgrimage. Thus, my input was sought for clarity on hajj quota management.

When I asked the investigators, they assured me I was not a suspect but called merely to answer questions and share any knowledge relevant to the investigation. As a responsible citizen, I supported the inquiry fully and answered all questions truthfully.

Many others have also been invited; it’s just that my name seems to attract greater media attention. Unfortunately, this has led to sensational headlines and even caricatures depicting me unfairly.

We are one nation, like a family. Strength comes from unity and mutual respect, regardless of creed or background. We must support government efforts for the common good and offer constructive reminders whenever necessary.

I trust the KPK was established with noble intentions to protect our country. When called, I did not hesitate to cooperate because I have nothing to hide. My business operates transparently and lawfully.

To the media, I urge professionalism: avoid provocative and misleading headlines just for clicks. Accurate reporting educates society and strengthens national unity, rather than sowing division.

We must be mature in handling such issues. History has shown how easily a country can be weakened by internal discord.

Lastly, remember the wisdom in Surah Al-Hujurat: verify information carefully before accepting or spreading it, especially when its source is doubtful. False accusations not only harm others but ultimately bring regret upon ourselves.

I have faced many challenges, but all I invite is calm, clear understanding, and fairness. There is no wrongdoing on my part, and thus no need for fruitless clarifications.”

This statement offers a transparent look into his cooperation and stance amid the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the importance of truth and unity.
