Wind Capsizes Sibling’s Boat on Lake Toba, One Dead

On Tuesday afternoon, June 10, 2025, a tragic accident unfolded on the waters of Lake Toba, Samosir Regency, North Sumatra. A small fishing boat carrying two brothers, Amran Malau (49) and his younger sibling, capsized after being struck by fierce winds and towering waves near the Rondang Bulan Pulo Tao village in Simanindo district.

According to Hery Marantika, Head of the Medan SAR Office, the duo was out fishing when sudden storms made the waters perilous. The younger brother was quickly rescued by nearby residents who witnessed the incident, but Amran sadly never resurfaced.

Emergency teams launched a swift search and rescue operation after the incident was reported. After two relentless days combing the lake—combining surface sweeps and diving efforts—the rescue team located Amran’s body around 3.9 nautical miles east-northeast of the accident site, near Ciara Tigaras Beach, at approximately 3:30 PM local time.

Hery expressed deep condolences to the family and commended the coordinated efforts of the SAR units involved. “We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family during this difficult time and thank all rescue members for their dedication,” he shared.

Hisar Turnip, coordinator of the Lake Toba SAR post, reflected on the challenges faced during the search. “The weather was highly unstable with strong winds and rough waves complicating visibility for our divers. Despite these obstacles, teamwork and proper equipment made this outcome possible,” he stated.
